I was really in the mood to watch some stand-up comedy after watching "The Comedian", and I have been meaning to watch Martin's comedy since seeing his film "Dean", so I gave his Netflix special a shot.
Martin's style of stand-up is definitely different than what is usually my favorite. I often prefer the comedian's jokes to be personal and make up a story, but Martin's comedy is just a series of jokes. I think that the hilarity of his deadpan humor makes up for this lack of consistency, though, because he kept me invested simply because of how funny it was. There were a lot of jokes that were funny because they provided insightful commentary on things that we as human beings often take for granted. I like his ability to take something that wouldn't normally be funny and make a joke out of it. In terms of execution, it was relatively average in terms of stand-up special production value.
Overall, "Demetri Martin: Live (At the Time)" is a stand-up special for those who like dark, deadpan humor. It's short and is easy to start and pick up on later because of its format, too.
