Film #14 of the Halloween 31
My favorite part of the original film is its commentary. It is one of the first occurrences of the slasher movie trope to attempt to scare promiscuous teenagers. It also contained some great commentary on mental illness. The sequel was largely devoid of this commentary, and it was a it disappointing. In addition, the first movie relied less on gore to achieve its scares, building up suspense more naturally, but this movie had quite a bit of blood.
There are some really good things about this film too, though. The score is still extremely effective at building the suspense that is there. The title sequence is fantastic. The production design is great. The character development for the existing characters is further increased, however, the development for new characters is a little weak. The jump scares in the film are pretty effective.
So overall, "Halloween II" is a good sequel, but it is not as great as the original. It is still worth watching for fans of horror, and it's not as bad as the critics say.
