I can see the critics being unhappy with the plot. It's a fairly run-of-the-mill espionage comedy. It's completely predictable, the characters fit into clear archetypes, there's really nothing that differentiates it from other films of the genre in terms of the plot. The film is definitely funny, though. I found myself laughing a lot, and while the jokes weren't the most unique, they still worked. What makes this movie successful is the chemistry between the four lead actors. All of the actors are believable in their respective roles, and they do it in a way that is quite humorous.
I also found some redeeming qualities in the film's technical aspects. There is some really great cinematography in the film. The framing of the shot is used many times during the film to create a sense of comedic irony, which definitely adds to the meaning of the film. I also thought that the action scenes were well-choreographed and well-shot as to heighten excitement.
So overall, I enjoyed "Keeping Up with the Joneses". It's a fairly generic film, but it is funny and has some good qualities. It's not necessarily something to rush out to see, but it is a likable comedy.
