Film #23 of the Halloween 31
I have seen this movie repeatedly advertised because of its remastered re-release and the recent reboot. I knew it had a cult following as a B-movie, but I didn't know much else. With a free rental, I decided to give this film a shot. I enjoyed it as a B-movie, but I didn't love the film overall.
This film is extremely bizarre. There are so many things thrown in that don't make sense. It's not ambiguous, it's confusing. The plot jumps all over the place, and there is very little background given to the characters. Only two characters are decently developed, and those are Mike and Jody, but they aren't developed extremely well, either. The monsters in the film are random and unexplained, but they are pretty cool, especially the metal sphere. That being said, it is an enjoyable film. The special effects are a little cheesy, but that is characteristic of B-movies. There are some funny moments, probably unintentional, but still funny. The cinematography is really impressive, too.
So I can't say that I loved "Phantasm", or even that I understood it, but I can say that I enjoyed it. It's not something that I plan to watch all the time, nor do I plan on investing the time to watch the rest of the series, but it was an enjoyable B-movie watching experience.
