I generally tell people that the "Resident Evil" series is what ruined the zombie genre for me, however, I remember liking the first two, with the third film being what ruined the genre. Still, with the release of the next and final film in the series, I was able to get the first three for free, so I decided to give it another try.
This film is definitely not very well-made. Aside from a few creative shots utilizing security footage, the cinematography is really low-quality. The CGI of the film is absolutely horrible and cheesy. The acting is terrible, even the extras that play the zombies. None of the performances are believable at all, and all of the actors play their characters as completely stolid. To top that off, the characters aren't well-developed at all. The plot also isn't particularly good, but I don't know if that is necessarily the fault of the film, as it is based on a survival horror game, and that is exactly what the film feels like: an excuse for a series of action sequences and jump scares. There were really two things that I thought were actually redeemable about this film: the suspense was rather well-built (although it could be more effective if the characters were more sympathetic), and the set design was really impressive.
Overall, I don't think that "Resident Evil" is a very good movie, but it is enjoyable enough that I am still willing to give the rest of the series a chance.
