The writing of the film is less original than you would think. In fact, the plot is quite formulaic. The amazing character development is what made this film so good. All of the characters have extremely relatable elements. I don't think that someone could watch this film and not sympathize with the characters because of it. It is extremely effective, and creates a film that flies by. The characters are also extremely complex, making human mistakes and having moral dilemmas. In addition, there is very witty, funny dialogue to further develop the characters. These things stand the film out above the rest of the coming-of-age dramedies.
In addition, the acting in the film is great. Hailee Steinfeld is perfect as the protagonist. Her performance just works, perfectly balancing both the humorous and emotionally-driven sides of the character. Blake Jenner also nails his role, with a more emotion-oriented role, expressing believable feelings. Woody Harrelson is great as a comedic part of the film, but he is also very good in serving as the mentor character for the protagonist. Haley Lu Richardson and Hayden Szeto are also great in their roles.
So overall, "The Edge of Seventeen" does have a formulaic plot, but it has some hilarious, fresh dialogue and great character development complemented perfectly by great acting. If you like films of this genre, you should check it out.
