The plot of the film is cheesy, melodramatic, and predictable. That results in the film feeling just a little slow at times. Also, it requires a lot of suspension of disbelief in terms of the scientific elements of the film. The character development is good, but not great for the protagonist and weak for everyone else. There are a few genuinely good moments when the characterization fully draws me in to the story, however, these moments are always cut short, and I was taken out of the story yet again.
There isn't really anything special about the execution of the film either. The actors do their best with the mediocre script that they are given. The cinematography isn't particularly good, overly shaky in moments for no apparent reason. The soundtrack felt like it was chosen solely from things that people thought that teenagers would like, but actually don't. The production design is also extremely confusing, causing a lack of periodization.
Overall, I did like "The Space Between Us" in the fact that it was a somewhat enjoyable, yet ridiculously cheesy romantic comedy, but I definitely think that it could have been better executed, ultimately a disappointment given its interesting premise and talented cast.
