I have wanted to see this movie for a long while, as I tend to enjoy the films of Woody Allen. I finally decided to watch it by getting it from Netflix DVD, and I ended up having mixed feelings about the film.
The premise of the film is definitely intriguing, but in actuality, it sounds a lot funnier than it really was. There were some good laughs, but very few were laugh-out-loud, most of which involved mockery of the film industry, such as censorship and the projectionist scene. Other times, the humor gets a bit out of hand, with the gags going on for longer than necessary. I think that it was really cool how Allen took a film and re-arranged it to make new plot, however, the fact that the order was switched does make it feel a bit jumpy. Also, there were random musical performances by The Lovin' Spoonful, which seem out-of-place, and after reading about it, were not part of Allen's plan.
So overall, "What's Up, Tiger Lily?" is a creative take on filmmaking with some funny moments, but it is by no means something that someone needs to go to great extents to find. If you happen to find it for a couple of dollars at a yard sale or can get it on Netflix DVD, it may be worth checking out.
