At first, I wasn't super excited for "Wonder Woman". Although Gadot's Wonder Woman was the best part of last year's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", the trailers seemed mediocre. When the reviews started coming out, I became hesitantly eager.
I actually thought that the writing was surprisingly good. The WWI elements were really great, creating an interesting tone, much like that of "Captain America: The First Avenger" that I loved so much. There was also a refreshing amount of humor to be found in the film, with the obvious culture shock laughs, but also some funny commentary on the society of the time. The origin story is well-told, for the most part, definitely providing a satisfying backstory to provide context for the character prior to Justice League. Supporting characters are very well-developed, too. That being said, the writing isn't without flaws. The introduction that attempted to tie the film into the canon of the series felt a little forced and unnecessary. A bit of the dialogue is also a little cheesily-written during the emotional scenes.
Speaking of delivery, I thought that Gal Gadot's performance had its ups and downs. In "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", I thought she was perfect, as what we saw of her was mostly action scenes with some dialogue. In this film, where she is given more to do, a few of her inconsistencies are shown. Her accent drops in and out, and in some of the longer emotional scenes, she doesn't deliver the lines particularly well, however, I don't really hold it against her because she is a foreign actress. She absolutely knocks the action scenes out of the park, though. The visual execution is the biggest thing that I wish could be fixed. There are a lot of scenes that use green screen, and it is super obvious that it is artificial, to the point of being distracting a few times. There is also frequent, excessive use of slow motion in action scenes that didn't really need it. There were times when the scene was slowed down to show her doing a flip with no consequences to the fight. It was weird. With a bit more polish, I think this film could have been amazing.
Overall, I was definitely pleased by "Wonder Woman", and it is the best of the DC Universe so far, but it isn't perfect. I do recommend it to lead into "Justice League".
