I didn't have much to do tonight, so I decided to go see the dysfunctional family holiday dramedy "Almost Christmas". I wasn't expecting much, but I did end up enjoying the film quite a bit.
In ensemble holiday dramedies, there is often a problem with a lack of character development. I do not think that is as much of a problem in this film. The principal characters are really well-developed and garner audience sympathy very well. Some of the secondary characters are a bit weaker, like that played by John Michael Higgins, but as a whole, the character development is better than most in the genre. The film offers plenty of the advertised laughs, too. The chemistry of the actors helps a lot. J.B. Smoove was the funniest part of the film to me, but many other actors were great too, like Danny Glover and Mo'Nique.
In terms of technical qualities, there isn't anything spectacular, but there isn't anything particularly bad either. I did notice a few good shots, but there wasn't anything revolutionary or extremely impressive.
So overall, I really liked "Almost Christmas". It is definitely an above average Christmas comedy. If you like this genre of film, you should definitely check it out.
