"Lars and the Real Girl" sounded just quirky enough that I would like it. When I found it for free as part of Vudu's Movies on Us program, I gave it a shot. I'm glad that I did.
The plot of the film follows that of the average romantic comedy with one major exception: it is one-sided. This makes the film feel a lot fresher and more enjoyable. The pacing was nice: not too fast, but not too slow either. The comedy was subtle, but funny. The dialogue was sharp and witty. I also liked how the writers used the romantic storyline as a method of pushing the metaphorical and psychological message of the film.
The film was simply, but elegantly made. The production design and cinematography served mainly as methods of capturing the action on-screen. Instead of being flashy, the filmmakers chose to be more personal with the film, drawing us closer into the story. As a whole, the execution is more subtle. Gosling's performance is far more reserved than what I am used to seeing him do, especially in his newer films, and he plays the role well.
Overall, I liked "Lars and the Real Girl". It's a quirky, funny romantic dramedy. I highly recommend it, because it is free on Vudu's Movies on Us if you don't mind a few ads.
