"CHIPS" was yet another attempt to take a semi-serious TV show and turn it into an action comedy. I didn't get to see it in theaters because there was always something that I wanted to see more. What filmmakers don't realize is that "21 Jump Street" captured lightning in a bottle, it probably isn't going to happen again.
The plot of the film is ridiculously generic. It plays out the same as basically every inside job story, so it's super predictable. The character development isn't that great either. There are subplots that seem to be in an attempt to get the audience to relate to the characters, such as Jon's separation from his wife, but they often have detrimental effects. In that case, it just made the character feel whiny. The film has humor throughout, but it just isn't that great for the most part. There are a few genuinely funny moments, but there are far too many that play off of Ponch's "sex addiction". It just goes way too over-the-top way too often. That's not to say it wasn't completely unenjoyable, only that it wasn't as funny as it could have been.
The execution of the film was mediocre. There are a lot of shaky tracking shots during the chase scenes. There are so many excessive explosions that it might as well be a Michael Bay movie. The acting is frequently over-the-top. I'm really starting to think that Vincent D'Onofrio is beginning to get typecast in his roles.
Overall, I found myself mildly amused by "CHIPS", but it wasn't anything great. There are some funny moments, but the overly raunchy moments fell flat. It was just... okay.
