I wasn't expecting much out of "Girls Trip". It seemed like a fairly average, female-led romantic comedy. So I was surprised when it got good critic reviews, as that is unusual for this type of film, and I went to see it.
I definitely think that this film may have been rated a bit too highly. Yes, it is definitely funny, and there are a few hilarious moments. So I enjoyed it as a whole. It is still fundamentally flawed, though. There were some gags that were unnecessarily extended, most of which involved Tiffany Haddish's character. I thought that she was annoying and that most of the things that she did were over-the-top. I thought Jada Pinkett Smith's character was probably the funniest of the group, followed by Queen Latifah, as Regina Hall wasn't really given as much to do comedically. I also thought that the film tried to force in too much drama. There were subplots about adultery and the relationship between the group of friends. I think that it would have made for a much shorter, brisker, and better film if one of these subplots had been removed. Most of the people who are coming to this movie are coming for the laughs rather than the intensely romantic subplot, so it could have been fine without it. Execution-wise, it's fine, but there isn't anything that stood out of the ordinary, with the exception of a really funny trip scene.
Overall, I thought that "Girls Trip" was funny, but I don't think that it deserved the high reviews that it got because it's plot just isn't that original. It serves for good enjoyment, but not much else.
