The first "Guardians of the Galaxy" is my favorite film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and ranks in my top 15 overall. As such, I was thoroughly excited for the sequel, with it once being my most anticipated film of the year (until the materials for "Baby Driver" came out). Ultimately, I found myself disappointed.
I think that this film was what everyone had feared that the first would be. It took itself too seriously. While the humor was there, it lost a lot of the campy fun found in the first film. Out of the humor that was there, some was laugh-out-loud funny, but not nearly to the extent of the first film, and some was horribly cringe-worthy. The biggest mistake that the film made, in my opinion, occurred within the beginning of the film when they split the team up. This reduced the ability of the film to capitalize on the characters' chemistry, which is part of what made the first film as great as it was. The opening scenes rock it, and made me feel like I was in for a great reunion, but the film ultimately veered off of its path. There was melodrama forced in galore, and the clichéd father-son storyline didn't help. To top that off, I think that this film went a little too big once the conflict came into play, but I will not go into more detail regarding that.
The CGI in the film was a lot less impressive than that of the first. Some of the scenes that involved quicker action were so fake-looking to the point of being disorienting. This is probably one of the things that disappointed me the most, as the first film did such a good job of making a futuristic world appear quasi-realistic. I didn't even think that the soundtrack was as strong as that of the original. The actors all did a good job in their roles, with the notable exception of a Sylvester Stallone cameo that never really pays off.
Overall, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" disappointed me quite a bit, even though it isn't a bad film. When compared to the excellent first entry, though, it is a dilapidated shadow. In terms of the MCU, I'd say it is only in front of the first "Thor", and about on par with "Iron Man 2".
