I thought this film had potential to be funny, so I rented it. I honestly don't know what I was thinking. "Masterminds" is just an unfunny waste of a talented cast.
I really didn't find this film to be very funny at all. Many of the jokes were either stupid in nature or revolved around the stupid nature of the characters. I laughed more in the bloopers than I did the rest of the film, which is sad. All of the cast is great, but their potential is put to waste with the unfunny script. I also think that many of the actors overacted, especially Zach Galifianakis, whose accent was over-the-top and annoying. The story itself is a relatively formulaic heist film that is weighed down by the unfunny jokes. Being based on a true story, it had the potential of being interesting, but just fell flat.
Overall, I was thoroughly disappointed by "Masterminds". I rarely laughed, and I honestly wish I had used my free rental code (and my hour and a half) on something else. Oh well, you win some and you lose some.
