While I am not particularly a fan of Guillermo del Toro, I am a huge fan of this film. I think that it is an amazingly-written, amazingly-made film that everyone should see at least once in their life. That being said, when we got to watch it in a class, I was happy that others would get to experience it too.
I absolutely love the writing of this film. The protagonist is extremely well-developed. There is an extremely intense audience sympathy for the character. It's truly amazing how del Toro is so easily able to emotionally connect us to this character. In addition, the supporting characters are also quite dynamic. The antagonist, Captain Vidal, is the most interesting character in the film. The audience's opinion of him changes constantly, in an interesting way, depending on his actions at the moment. The writing's ability to manipulate the audience is perfect.
The film is also extremely well-made technically. The cinematography is amazing. The CGI (the little that is CGI) looks great. The practical effects are phenomenal, like the practical makeup for the Faun. In addition, the production design is fabulous. The acting of the film is perfect. Doug Jones was the right fit for the Faun, as he brings his normal eeriness to the film. Baquero, who plays Ofelia, is also perfectly cast in the role.
So overall, I absolutely love "Pan's Labyrinth". If you don't mind reading subtitles, this is definitely a film to check out. It's worth it.
