Most faith-based films are garbage. They are cheesy, overly preachy, poorly-made films. This film is definitely an exception. Playing out less like a faith-based drama and more like a sword-and-sandals epic meets a noir-style detective film, "Risen" definitely impresses.
For the most part, the story keeps you interested. There are a couple parts that drag, but most of the film keeps you on the edge of your seat in suspense. There are a good amount of battle-scenes to quench the thrill-seeking crowd, and enough Biblical elements to please the faith-based crowd.
The acting is pretty good. The supporting cast does very well, especially Tom Felton, who plays Clavius's aid. Joseph Fiennes is really good too, being stolid enough in the beginning, when the character warrants it, and emotional and heartfelt enough for the end where he needs it.
Is Risen an amazing movie? No, but it is definitely very good for a film of this genre. If this genre of film appeals to you, you should check it out.

I look at films as if through old red and blue 3D glasses— one lens is as art, one lens is as entertainment.
