I decided that in honor of the upcoming Spring Break, I was going to watch a Spring Break themed film (albeit a ridiculously exaggerated Spring Break that is absolutely nothing like I will be doing, I will be doing schoolwork and watching a movie marathon). I have wanted to see this movie because I like James Franco, however I have avoided it until this point because of excessive sexualization.
Well, there was excessive sexualization, and it was bad. It was pointless. There were copious amounts of nudity in the film for the sake of having nudity. I don't like it when films do this, I feel that it shows a lack of storytelling and therefore a bad movie.
I didn't like the plot... the little of it that there was. The plotline was extremely simple, and most of the film was full of excessive party scenes. The film tried a nonlinear storyline and it did not work. The first hour of the film seemed like the movie was Selena Gomez's story, and then in the last 30 minutes, it switched.
Speaking of Selena Gomez, she seemed out-of-place. Her character made conflicting decisions which didn't really make sense. James Franco was annoying with his terrible accent that was a mix of a bad Southern accent and an attempt at a gangster. His character kept repeating "Spring Break forever" in a voiceover for absolutely no reason! I also hated the score. It was a mix of bad techno music and gun sound effects, which went to far and was annoying.
So overall, I was disappointed with "Spring Breakers". It is not worth the time, and not worth the money if you have to spend money on it. The only redeeming quality that it has is a little bit of decent cinematography, emphasizing a little bit. Avoid this film.

I look at films as if through old red and blue 3D glasses— one lens is as art, one lens is as entertainment.
